American Made in Rio

Team USA will be showcasing new uniforms in Rio today for the Olympics Opening Ceremony.

The patriotic uniforms which literally light up (well, one of them does anyway) were unveiled last week by designer Ralph Lauren

In an effort to incorporate wearable technology into the designs, both the team patch on the breast pocket and the letters U.S.A. on the back of the blazers were originally designed to have electroluminescent panels powered by an interior battery pack. Unfortunately, the Olympic committee wasn't on board with the idea of having the entire USA team wearing the battery-powered uniforms, so if you want to get a glimpse of the design, you'll need to pay attention to the flag bearer. The committee has agreed to let the flag bearer wear the new suit.

You may remember the disappointment in 2012 when it was discovered that the uniforms were actually made in China, and not in the U.S. After that controversy hit the public,

Ralph Lauren agreed to domestically manufacture Team USA's apparel for Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. Still feeling the heat, Mr. Lauren included in his unveiling an announcement addressing where the new uniforms were made confirming that the uniforms will be American made

“Everything is made in America, America should have a moment right now.” - Ralph Lauren

Watch the opening ceremony tonight, Aug, 5 starting at 6pm ET. If you don't have cable, you can watch the 2016 Olympics live-streaming on the NBC Olympics website!
